Level control loop 101: from tank instrument to PLC to operator screenA piping and instrumentation diagram of buffer tank TK-101 with level transmitter LT-101, transfer pump P-101 with its motor, flow transmitter FT-101 and control valve FV-101. Dashed signal lines run from each instrument into the input and output modules of a PLC rack. The level signal is highlighted and continues from the PLC over Ethernet to an HMI screen showing the same tank, its level of 62.4 percent and the alarm limits.FIELD · P&IDCONTROL · PLCSUPERVISORY · HMIFROM SUPPLYTO PROCESSTK-101BUFFER TANKLT101MP-101FT101FV-101DO · RUN / STATUS4–20 mAPSCPUAIAIAODOETRUNETHERNETLIC-101 · TK-101 levelAUTOHH 90H 80L 20LL 10LT-10162.4%FT-101FV-101P-10118.6 m³/h41 % openRunningNO ACTIVE ALARMSLOOP 101 · ILLUSTRATIVE VALUES Level loop 101: tank TK-101 with LT-101, pump and valve, signal into a PLC, then over Ethernet to an HMI screen showing 62.4 percent level.FIELD · P&IDCONTROL · PLCSUPERVISORY · HMITK-101LT101P-101FV-1014–20 mAPSCPUAIAIAODORUNETHLIC-101 · TK-10162.4 %ALARM H 80 · L 20P-101 running · FV-101 41 %

Control architecture

Four levels, designed as one system.

Read from the field up. Signals rise from instruments to controllers, operator screens and wider platforms; commands travel back down. We define what happens at each level and how the levels talk to each other.

  1. L4Enterprise

    Enterprise

Business systems, reporting and the software platforms that use operational data.

    Systems integration & IoT

Communication between controllers, devices and software platforms, with data made available to wider systems.

  2. L3Supervisory

    Supervisory

SCADA and HMI stations, alarm handling, trends, building management.

    SCADA and HMI

Operator screens, alarm handling and trend views designed around the tasks operators actually perform, including monitoring of building services.

  3. L2Control

    Control

PLCs and controllers running logic, interlocks and sequences.

    Control architecture & PLC programming

Controller topology, network layout and I/O allocation defined before programming starts. Structured, commented logic with interlocks, alarms and sequences traceable to the functional description.

  4. L1Field

    Field

Sensors, transmitters, valves, motors and building services equipment.

    Instrumentation interfaces

I/O lists and signal definitions for sensors, transmitters and actuators, including ranges and scaling.

Typical technical artifacts

What a project can include.

The exact package is agreed from your context, risk, timeline and responsibilities.

Traceable by design. Control logic and operator interfaces are traced back to an agreed functional description, so behaviour can be reviewed before it is tested.
